Hole 5 at Montgomerie Links Golf Club - The player feedback on this hole is that it can much more difficult than its length suggests.

I. HOLE 5 PAR 3 - THE REAL SECRET TO STOPPING THE BALL ON THE NARROW GREEN.
Montgomerie Links uses four different tee locations on each hole gold/ blue/ white/ red. This allows us to have the ability to vary the length that the hole plays and also vary the challenge for the golfer on each visit, in this series of hole descriptions we will look at the playability of the holes from two perspectives, first from the viewpoint of the average player from the Blue tee player and then from a grade or professionals’ perspective from the Monty or Gold tees.
1. BLUE TEE - HOLE 5 PAR 3
Hole 5, Par 3 (118 yards) Blue tee (Average player)
Tee shots
Montgomerie links golf course is diverse in its ability to challenge all aspects of the golfer’s game and the short 118-yard 5th hole is no exception. Standing on the tee box the player is faced with a relatively short shot that demands precision and touch. This is truly a classic short hole that can vary depending on the pin position and weather conditions it has a water carry and a bunker guarding the front of the green. There is also a classic runoff area at the back of the green and getting up and down from here is certainly a challenge.
2. GOLD TEE (MONTY TEE - HOLE 5 PAR 3
Hole 5, Par 3 (146 yards), Gold Tee (A grade/ Professional player)
From the back tees the better player will normally hit a wedge but when the wind is into the player's face is when this hole is a real challenge. Most players will need to hit the knockdown shot. The secret here is to get spin on the ball to hold the narrow green. The green is long and offers 3 distinct pin positions left/ right and middle, the middle pin placement offers an extra challenge as the player cannot see the base of the flag as it is obscured by the front bunker and this makes judging distance crucial.
II. CHALLENGES OF HOLE 5 PAR 3 AT MONTGOMERIE LINKS GOLF CLUB
In unfavorable weather conditions, with a broken swing at Hole 5, what happens if the ball goes into the water hazard?
At Montgomerie Links Golf Club, only when the ball has touched the other side and has fallen into the water can the player drop the ball in the “drop zone”. Although with a short distance (118 yards from the green tee box, and 79 yards from the red tee box), a missed stroke causes the ball to hit into the water before the ball has reached the other side, and the player will not be allowed to drop the ball in the area " drop zone", but can only choose one of the following two options:
- The player is penalized one stroke and replays in the tee box.
- The player is penalized one stroke and drops the ball in the spot where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard.
And until the ball hits the opposite side of the water hazard, they continue to play on the other side.

III. TIPS ON PLAYING THE SHORT HOLE 5
Check the wind direction it can make this hole play completely differently from one day to the next, the wind tends to swirl around in this area of the golf course. The higher you hit the ball the more the wind will affect it. All in all, do not be fooled by the relatively short distance of this hole there is disaster awaiting those who are not con concentrating when playing this truly classic short par 3.
